Val Thorens
About
Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in the Alps. Alongside Meribel and Courchevel it makes up the renowned Trois Vallees ski area, the largest linked and most extensive area in Europe. Val Thorens is the most convenient of the three resorts due to its purpose built nature. It also boasts exceptional snow reliability and a huge range of choice for all levels of skier.Val Thorens also has some of the most stunning views. A trip to the top of the Cime de Caron, the highest point in the three valleys, is well worth the effort, and the ski down is superb.
A visit to Val Thorens will not leave you disappointed.
Skiing and Boarding In val thorens
Skiing in Val Thorens really does offer something for all levels of skier. There are 170km of pistes (66 runs) in Val Thorens alone, with access to the 600km of Les Trois Vallee (328 runs).
This season has seen the beginner slopes. There are also plenty of blues to keep the first timer happy.
The more challenging pistes like many resorts can be found towards the top of the resort and the glacier. There are some fantastic wide open runs which direct you back towards the resort centre, perfect for Intermediates.
Some of the best off-piste in the Three Valleys can be found in around Val Thorens. Being the highest resort in Europe you can almost always find some tempting powder to play in. Skiing on the glaciers of Peclet and Chaviere can be awesome, and this is where to go after a massive snow fall (with a guide). Find couloirs at le Plein Sud but they get tracked out quickly. The long ride over the Gebroulaz glacier down towards Meribel is a great adventure. You can get to this by hiking up from the top of the Col chair lift.
For those park rats among you, the Val Thorens park is immense. The kickers are big and keep on coming, and are always kept is great condition. There is always plenty of variety in the type of rails and boxes to jib on, these change regularly to keep the locals happy.
Apres Ski
Apres ski In Val Thorens has had a little bit of piste side glamour added to it this year. The arrival of the Folie Douce means you can drink, eat and dance in your ski boots all at the same time. It follows on from its older sisters success in Val d'Isere. It is a place no lover of the mountain apr?should miss!
For something less crazy and closer to resort, you should try the Frog and Roast Beef where you can feel at home with British food in the highest British pub in Europe. El Gringos serves fantastic Tex-Mex food. There are long wooden benches, perfect for large groups. For a pizza, or traditional Savoyard cuisine, La Paillotte in the town centre is very cosy and serves excellent food. For the foodies out there, you must try L'Oxalys. This restaurant is run by Jean Sulpice, who has recently been awarded a Michelin star, in fact the 'highest' star in Europe at 2300m. Make sure you book well in advance.
The row of bars at the top of the resort is where you should begin a night out. Work your way along through bars such as the Frog and Roast Beef, Friends, O'Connells and Le Viking (which also has internet). Later on the place to be is the Malaysia cellar bar. It is right by the piste and looks like it's just a little wooden hut but is actually a large club which has live bands all the time. The Underground nightclub in Place de Peclet is a cheesy option, something every ski holiday needs!
For activities other than skiing, Val Thorens offers a lot; from taking a microlight or paragliding flight to introductions to ice climbing and from tobogganing to mountain biking down the mountain after the slopes are closed. In addition there are the more subdued activities to choose from. The revamped Aquaclub combines fitness, sport and relaxation. It has an island theme and includes a swimming pool, in which you can swim against the current. There are also several saunas, Jacuzzis and a heated solarium. The fitness centre contains a weight/circuit training room and a fitness room. Leisure activities include tennis, volleyball, football, squash, ping pong, badminton, roller skating, hockey, and a kids' play room with trampolines and ball pools. The Institut des Neiges has moved to a new 2-storey chalet, dedicated to beauty and well-being. There are many treatments on offer from 1 to 5-day packages.
